The personal stories and adventures of a nerdy food lover.

The Sunshine Award

The Sunshine Award is an award given by bloggers to other bloggers. It’s for someone “who positively and creatively inspires others in the World of blogging”. Kind of in the same vein as the Academy Awards, I guess, except it’s related to blogging not cinematics. I’m very new to blogging, having only started a couple of months ago, so you could imagine my surprise when a fellow blogger, Courtney whose blog is called Spasmodic Kitchen (how cool is that blog name?), advised that she has named me as a recipient of this award. I thought to myself “Really? Me?”. When I started this blog, I didn’t even think that anyone would be remotely interested in what my thoughts were or want to read about what I get up to. I’m totally blown away! Even though this award doesn’t have any real status, it’s nice to know that what you’re doing is of some enjoyment to people. Thank you Courtney for the acknowledgement and I hope that we can both continue to share our adventures with each other.

Update: I would also like to thank Natural Euphoria and Fly ‘n Cook who have also nominated me for this award. If you haven’t already, please take the time to check out these great foodie blogs.

There are a few things you are supposed to do as a recipient of this award:

  • Thank the person who gave you the award and post a link back to their blog – check.
  • Nominate 10 of your favourite blogs to receive the award and let them know by leaving a comment on their blog – check-ish.
  • Ask your nominated bloggers to pass on the award to their own favourite blogs – check.
  • Copy and paste the award on your blog – check.
  • Tell people a little about yourself by answering the 10 questions provided – check.

The 10 questions:

1) Who is your favourite philosopher
Not really into philosophy, because it tends to do my head in so I can’t really answer this question…..
2) What is your favourite number?
My favourite number is 8, because when you push it over it looks like the infinity symbol ∞
3) What is your favourite animal?
Tiger. I’ve always had a fascination with Tigers, plus they are REALLY cute as cubs.
4) What are your Facebook and Twitter accounts?
Not sure what this question is asking…. I do have both types of accounts and they represent a great distraction in my life.
5) What is your favourite time of day?
Any time of the day when I’m able to eat is my favourite time of the day!
6) What was your favourite vacation?
My favourite vacation involved the first time I travelled to France; southern France and Paris specifically. That’s when my love affair with Frenchy stuff began.
7) What is your favourite physical activity?
I love dancing, although I’m not really that great at it.
8) What is your favourite non-alcoholic drink?
Favourite non-alcoholic drink would have to be tea.  So comforting and relaxing.
9) What is your favourite flower?
I don’t have one favourite flower; I have two.  I love Oriental Lillies and Frangipanis.
10) What is your passion?
Food and Frenchy stuff of course!

My 10-ish nominations:

As I mentioned earlier, because I’m new to blogging, I don’t have 10 nominations but here are the bloggers that are really inspirational to me….and hopefully they will share their inspirations too.

  • Danielle at Keeping Up With The Holsbys – Danielle is a fellow Aussie blogger and blogs about “the contents of my head…..and my pantry”. This blog has been a great source of inspiration for my blog and she posts wonderful recipes.
  • Emma at Poires au Chocolat – Another beautiful blog that provides me with inspiration. Emma does beautiful baked goods and desserts.
  • Acorn in my Kitchen – A really cool food blog where the recipes are paired with music. This blog resonates with me because I always have music blaring when I cook; gets the creative juices flowing.
  • Angela at Madame Croquette – A funky blog that has some really interestingly delicious recipes.
  • Becoming Madame – Being a massive Francophile, this blog is where I get my Frenchy fix.
  • Matt Prentice, A Culinary Blog – Matt is amazing! Having been in the food and restaurant game for many years, his stunning dishes constantly inspire me.
  • The Pearl Kitchen – I love this blog because I can relate so many great memories in my life to the food and family references made by Eric, one of the contributors. It provides me with inspiration to share more about the food of my heritage.

The Very Inspiring Blogger Award

Thank you to Cathy at onthevectorLife is Short. Eat Hard! and Chef Randall at Savor the Food for nominating me to receive this award. I’m incredibly honoured and grateful for the acknowledgement and I hope The Cooking Chook can continue to inspire fellow bloggers….

So, it looks like there are some rules with this award:

  • Display the award logo on your blog – check.
  • Thank the person who nominated you – check
  • List 7 things about yourself – check
  • Nominate 15 bloggers and inform them – maybe check

Seven-ish things about me…..

I’ve added a couple of extra tid bits just because I can…..

  1. I’m a bit of a nerd. The biological, chemical and medical sciences excite me. I’m also quite partial to things that are fantasy or science fiction-y in nature. I also study as a hobby.
  2. I love to read….a lot. My partner bought me a Kindle and banned me from buying physical books because there’s just too many of them to store in our little house.
  3. I’m very organised. I like things to be in, what I consider, their place. Or is that called OCD?
  4. I love food. Who would’ve thought? I can get quite pre-occupied with food, sometimes thinking about what I’m going to eat next before I finish what I’m currently eating.
  5. I love a bargain. I love the thrill of being able to find bargains and not having to pay full price for anything. I think this also has something to do with feeling like you’re “sticking it” to the “man” when you pay less than RRP.
  6. I love cartoons. My favourite are the old Looney Tunes cartoons. They always brighten my mood when I watch them.
  7. I’m easily spooked by things like strange noises, but I’d happily watch a scary movie by myself in the dark.
  8. I love stationary. There is something about pens, pencils and notebooks that gets me very excited. One of my favourite places to shop is Officeworks. Yes – very sad.
  9. I am crazy about iconic t-shirts. If it has a cool, cheesy, cute, witty saying, logo or picture on it – I’ll own it. This drives my partner crazy, because my wardrobe basically consists of these t-shirts and he thinks I spend way too much money on them. Here is a sneak peek at part of my collection:

My 15 nominations….

As I’ve said previously, I’m new to blogging so I haven’t really explored enough of the blogosphere to have 15 nominations. The bloggers listed below are a start, however, I’ll update this page as I come across more inspirational blogs.

  • Annie at Annie’s Cooking Lab – A beautiful food blog with many great recipes, especially baking recipes. Annie has a cute Labrador named Boomer who is her cooking partner.
  • Tim at Lottie + Doof – Another gorgeous food blog with interesting recipes and stories about food. The food styling/photography is absolutely stunning.
  • Julie at Willow Bird Baking – The wonderful baked creations that Julie blogs about makes me salivate every time I read her posts. Truly inspiring…..
  • Lee at Cook. Eat. Blog. – Lee is amazing! This guy can truly cook! His massive repertoire of recipes from all over the World inspires me to try new recipes that I would never have thought to try.
  • Natural Euphoria – This young lady has the most amazing food experiences and even more amazing photos of food, which frequently gives me pings of inspiration. I even have a blog post up my sleeve that has been inspired by this blog.
  • Dee at dbites – Adelaide Food Blog – A blog about everything great about food in Adelaide. This blog inspires me to explore and experience what my home town of Adelaide has to offer.
  • The team at The Chopping Board – Another fantastic Adelaide food blog that reviews the many wonderful places to eat around Adelaide.
  • TraMi at VietnamEazy – An amazing Vietnamese-American who is about to embark on her first writing project, a fictional novel about a Vietnamese family and how food affects their lives. A storyline that certainly resonates with me.
  • Irene at A Beautiful Day – Another amazing Vietnamese-American who runs marathons (crazy) and posts lovely recipes accompanied with delectable photos.
  • Mel at Beyond Thirty – One of my bestest friends in the whole World, a fellow voracious reader and all round great person. Mel’s blog is mostly about the books that she reads, but it’s the little hints of honesty about her life and her passions that inspire me to try and become a better person.
  • Anthony at FoodMeUpScotty – I discovered Anthony via Twitter and he is all about great food that is served to you. I am amazed (and a little envious) of all the places that Anthony gets to eat at, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to emulate his dining conquests one day.
  • Stefan at Stefan’s Gourmet Blog – A Dutchman with an incredible handle on Italian food! Stefan has great skill and culinary breadth for a home-cook who, like me, works in the financial industry.
  • Adelaidefoodies – Another gem of an Adelaide blogger who is a wine chemist and ranked in the top 20 blogs on urbanspoon (Yowsers!). I really love reading about the foodie reviews around my hometown, and like other Adelaide food blogs I’ve come across so far, this blog inspires me to get out and explore my own city.
  • Cupcaketravels – The author of this blog had me a ‘Paris’. I love everything to do with France, and I’m certainly living vicariously through this blog. It inspires me to work harder at scheming my way back to France….

The REALITY Blog Award

Reality blogger award

Thank you Adelaidefoodies for nominating me for the REALITY Blog Award! I came across Adelaidefoodies via Twitter and I was so excited to have found another food blogger in  my own city! Since then, I have come across a couple more and they are my go-to blogs for foodie stuff that is happening in Adelaide or ideas on places to eat.

Like the other blogger awards, there are certain things that a recipient of these awards should fulfill as part of the fun.

  • Visit and thank the blogger who nominated you – check.
  • Acknowledge that blogger on your blog and link back – check.
  • Answer the same 5 questions presented – check, see below.
  • Nominate up to 20 blogs for the award and notify them on their blogs – checkish. This part is always the hard part for me because there are so many blogs out there to explore. As I’ve previously stated above, I’ll update this page as I come across more  inspirational bloggers.
  • Copy and paste the award on your blog somewhere – check.

My answers to the 5 questions:

1) If you could change one thing what would you change?
I wish I knew all the things I know now, ten years ago.
2) If you could repeat an age, what would it be?
I would have to say 21. A lot of special things happened when I turned 21.
3) What one thing really scares you?
4) What is one dream you have not completed, and do you think you’ll be able to complete it?
Becoming a Doctor. I’m hoping next year will be the year *fingers crossed*
5) If you could be someone else for one day, who would it be?
Rachel Khoo – Pastry chef living in Paris. Rachel is living one of my dreams. Or Dr Charles Teo, a really well known Australian Neurosurgeon – Neurosurgery is a specialty I’m considering if I get into med school.

The Liebster Award

Thank you to Cupcaketravels for nominating me for the Leibster Award. I wasn’t quite sure what this award actually was about, so I had to do some Googling to find out about its meaning and origin. I found out that Leibster is a German word meaning ‘dearest’ and that the original rules state that you have to nominate 3-5 bloggers who have less than 3,000 readers. How you know whether or not someone has less than 3,000 readers, I have no idea, but I’m going to nominate some bloggers anyway. There are some other rules associated with receiving this award:

  1. Visit and thank the blogger who nominated you – check.
  2. Acknowledge that blogger on your blog and link back – check.
  3. Answer the 11 questions proposed by the blogger who nominated you – check, these are answered below.
  4. Select 11 people for the award – checkish. I think I’ll refer back to the original rules and nominate 3-5. I’ll let the new nominees decide whether they do this too.
  5. Pose 11 new questions to the new nominees – check, these are listed below.
  6. Copy and paste the award on your blog somewhere – check.

Here are the bloggers I nominate to receive the Leibster Award:

  • Cooking in Sens – I really have a thing for bloggers who live in France. This is the third blogger that I’ve nominated who lives in that wonderful country! A sensational blog about incredible food! The amazing pictures and recipes always stir up a hunger in me.
  • Judy at petit4chocolatier – I have a thing for sweet things and baking, and Judy’s blog is all about that! It’s hard to restrain myself from licking my laptop screen looking at Judy’s creations – sad, I know….
  • Life is short. Eat Hard! – A fellow Aussie who is living abroad, this blog is about food whether it be at home or abroad. I love reading about this blogger’s foodie adventures.

Here are the 11 questions posed by Cupcaketravels and my answers:

1) Who was your favourite pet?
My current dog, Blackie, who is a terrier bitzer. He’s really cute and I love him heaps.
2) If you could do anything and be paid for it, what would it be?
Eat. One of my all-time favourite past-times.
3) What is your all-time favourite, above-all-else food?
It would have to be my Mum’s Pho Bo (Beef noodle soup). Although, chocolate ranks pretty highly too. This question is hard, because I don’t think you can just have one favourite….
4) What was the best present you ever received?
My KitchenAid appliances. This years birthday/Christmas has been the best ever so far!
5) What was the best present you ever gave?
That is a really hard question. I don’t really survey the people I give gifts to. I’m not sure how to answer this question.
6) If there is anything you regret so far in life, what is it?
Applying myself more back in high school. I might have ended up in medical school a lot sooner. Who knows?
7) If you could go back and tell your 10-year old self one thing, what would it be?
Boys are trouble…. Or maybe not to take things in life for granted.
8) What is guaranteed to put you to sleep?
Sitting on the couch with my legs up on the ottoman. Does it every time.
9) What makes you laugh the most?
I know this is going to sound bad, but people unsuspectingly walking into things.
10) What is your favourite movie?
The original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonker.
11) If you could only choose one music album to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Seeing Sounds by N*E*R*D

Here are the questions I would like to pose to the new nominees :

  1. What is the one food you would not eat, even if you were offered $50 bijillion to eat it?
  2. What was your earliest childhood memory that had to do with food?

Blog of the Year Award 2 star jpeg

Thank you to Adelaidefoodies for nominating me for the Blog of the Year 2012 award. Adelaidefoodies has been kind enough (or crazy enough) to nominate me to receive my first and second star for this award. The blogger I would like to nominate for this award is:

  • Cath at Confessions of a Glutton – This young lady is truly amazing and inspiring. Another fellow Aussie, living in Sydney who posts awesome recipes and thoughts about the foodie places she visits. Cath has been so much of an inspiration that the first recipe I tried using my beloved KitchenAid goodies, was one of her recipes!

The rules of the award are:

  1. Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ award, a link to their blogs in your post, and notify them on their blogs – check.
  2. Write a blog post and tell nominate blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award – check.
  3. Please include a link back to this page ’Blog of the Year 2012 Award’ – – and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!) – check.
  4. Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them – check.
  5. You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience – This is optional, so I decided not to join the group.
  6. As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars… – check!
