Happy New Year Pav

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!! I hope you all had a wonderful time in the last 24 hours, welcoming in the new year. For me, 2013 was eventful in a good and bad way. I took a bold leap of faith regarding my career and happiness, and decided to quit work to return to full-time study, in the hope of pursuing a career in Medicine. I’m currently not quite there yet, but I feel like I’m heading in the right direction. On the bad side of things, I lost 3 very dear people from my life in the space of 6 weeks a few months ago. It’s been a very bittersweet holiday period, as it reminds me that these people aren’t around anymore but the up side has been that my partner’s sister had a baby shortly after the most recent loss, so it’s exciting that the new addition to the family was able to celebrate their first Christmas. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!!! I hope that you all are having a wonderful day so far and Santa Claus has brought you some awesome pressies! I thought I’d sneak in a quick post to show you what I’ve made for Christmas lunch dessert this year. My plan for the month of December was to post a few recipes leading up to Christmas. This plan kinda went out the window when I picked up a contract position to work during the Uni holidays, and with the many social events that tend to pop up this time of year, my free time to cook or bake has been limited. Despite this, there is one recipe that I really wanted to share with everybody before Christmas. I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN!!!!! Where has this year gone? It felt like only yesterday that I was doing Christmas, now I’m doing it all over again! This year I thought I’d try something a bit different. Inspired by the fact that I am an unemployed Uni bum, I thought I’d check out some Christmassy treats that I can make. My plan is to make several treats that I can put into a gift box, and give that to people for Christmas. First cab of the rank is Rocky Road. Show your support for Movember!

For those who are not familiar with Movember, it’s a month long event held in November that raises funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. How does Movember raise funds and awareness? Well, for the 30 days of November, those who participate in Movember try their best at growing a Mo (also known as a moustache), and in return for their efforts, the public is asked to sponsor them. So, on the 1st of November, guys start with a clean shaven face and by the end of 30 days, hopefully an impressive Mo has grown! Many celebrate the last day of Movember by shaving off their efforts. It’s amazing how much this movement has taken off considering it started 10 years ago with 30 guys growing a Mo for a great charitable cause. I’ve read on the Movember website that $443 million has been raised so far worldwide! If you are interested in finding out more information about Movember, click here. Apart from highlighting the importance of Movember, I really wanted to share with everyone an awesome YouTube video that my friend did in support of Movember as his alter ego Not Ron Burgundy. Best Ever Banana Bread

Whenever I see a claim that something is the ‘best ever’, I’m always curious to find out why. Not because I’m in the business of disproving these claims, but if something is the ‘best ever’, I want in on it! So, when I saw a recipe for the best ever banana bread on Taste.com.au, I had to make it. Banana bread is a wonderful way to use up those dodgy looking bananas that look like they’ve taken a turn for the worst, the more ripe the banana, the better the bread. Read more…

A tribute to Pappou and Yiayia

‘When it rains, it pours’, isn’t that how the saying goes? In my case, this saying certainly describes the last two months of my life. In two months, three people were taken from my world, two of which were my DBF’s grandfather and grandmother – or Pappou and Yiayia as they say in Greek. Sounds a bit excessive doesn’t it. I was surprised at how hard the loss has hit me. I mean, Pappou and Yiayia were my DBF’s grandparents, not mine; however, I still felt a great sense of loss. Upon reflection of my feelings, I began to understand why I felt the way I did. Pappou and Yiayia were the closest thing I ever had to real grandparents. Read more…

When things aren’t that great, I like to bake because baking is my refuge. It provides me with respite from all that is bad and helps me remember all that is good in this world. Quick and easy roast chicken – the brown paper bag way

I love me a good roast chicken! If you don’t believe me, check out this blog post. In fact, I’m roasting a chicken for dinner tonight but that’s not the topic of this blog post. As much as I love roasting a whole chicken, it does take a while and sometimes I don’t really want to wait that long to eat or I’m not that organised to start prepping for a roast chicken a couple of hours before dinner. So, if I see a recipe that can make my life easier but still give me a delicious meal, I’m more than happy to give it a crack. I was flicking through the most current issue of Taste.com.au magazine (September issue), and stumbled across an interesting recipe. It stated that I could have roast chicken in 30-40 minutes and it involved a brown paper bag. Read more…

When a ‘boy look’ turns out to be a winner

Tell me if you’ve ever had this conversation before:

DBF (Dear Boyfriend): *shouts out from another room* Baaaaabe. Have you seen the [insert random item]?
Me: *shouts back* It’s in the [insert random location]
*a few minutes pass*
DBF: Are you sure it’s in the [insert random location]? I can’t see it.
Me: *Walks to the other room, pulls out item in question in less than 2 seconds* Here you go.
DBF: Hmph….thanks babe.

The situation I’ve just described is known as the ‘boy look’, where your other half fails to see what is right in front of them. This situation occurs with moderate frequency in my household, and I tease my DBF a lot for it. I can’t say, however, that I’m immune from having the odd ‘boy look’ moment myself. In fact, it only happened to me the other day when I was shopping for the recipe in this post. Read more…
