Sometimes I like to take it SLOOOOOOW

So, Australia is now in the throes of autumn (not that it feels like it in Adelaide; daily temps are still in the mid to high 20’s) and I love this time of year because it means I can start cooking some comfort food! To me, comfort food is all about food that has been cooked slowly, over a few hours and makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. I’m talking about hearty soups, casseroles, roasts, bakes, just to name a few of the things I love to cook. I’ve been itching for WEEKS to be able to make something that was season appropriate. As soon as the Bureau of Meteorology forecasted cooler weather (I’d been cyber stalking the site for a few weeks) I immediately thought of osso bucco. Read more…

Spaghetti Cheapballs

Whilst exploring the blogosphere, I’ve noticed a bit of a trend when reading other people’s posts about food. The three things that come up quite regularly are that food should be: 1) cheap; 2) quick, and; 3) easy to prepare. A couple of years ago, I came across a recipe for Spaghetti Meatballs in a Women’s Weekly cookbook. What’s so special about this recipe, I hear you ask? Well, instead of making the meatballs from scratch, the meatballs are made from the meat in sausages. How clever is that? And if you use bottled pasta sauce or passata, then you are saving a whole heap of time and money; the two things that are very important to me now that I’m a Uni-bum. This recipe can easily serve four people in about 25 minutes.

Never turn your back on a Hungry Man – How my salmon got stolen

So, this post was going to be about a really easy and delicious salmon recipe but I thought I needed to do a community service and warn the Ladies of a potential threat in your homes: The Hungry Man. It is well known in my household that I’m a blogger, which means that most of the time, ANY food I make is a potential blog post. With that, comes some ground rules that are to be followed if you want to eat the food I make:

  1. Make sure that said blogger has enough space to do her mise en place as it will undoubtedly involve pictures taken in weird bodily positions. In other words, no hovering.
  2. Once said blogger has prepared the food and is ready to plate, be prepared to wait a moment before taking any food as, once again, more pictures will be taken of the finished product. In other words, be patient and wait until it is clear which serve you can take because I want to ensure there is some continuity with the pictures taken. Read more…

These are a few of my favourite things – Burgers

I love burgers. In my eyes, burgers are an amazing combination of carbs, protein, dairy, fruit, vegetables and condiments. Adelaide seems to have gone a little burger mad this summer with more food trucks and burger joints popping up around the place, and from what I hear there will be even more appearing in the coming months. So, you could imagine that my diet of late has consisted of a ‘few’ burgers. And don’t think that I’m talking about your typical Macca’s or Hungry Jack’s type burgers, I’m talking about gourmet, quality ingredients and construction type burgers. The KitchenAid Christening – Basil Pesto with Green Eggs and Ham

December 2012 was a pretty memorable month for me. Thanks to my partner, his family and Santa, I was given a KitchenAid food processor and stand mixer for my birthday/Christmas present. Two rather incredible kitchen appliances; I couldn’t ask for better gifts! So, after the initial excitement subsided, I started thinking about what I was going to make using my new toys. It just so happened that a recipe came fluttering into my inbox from the amazing Cath Chen of the Confessions of a Glutton blog fame – Basil Pesto! I have never made pesto before but I absolutely love eating it, and the only reason why I had not made it before was because I didn’t have a food processor…until now. Read more…

Red Spice Road – Melbourne

Red Spice RoadSo, my final day at work is drawing ever closer and a quick work trip to Melbourne saw me treated to a wonderful farewell dinner with some of my work colleagues at Red Spice Road located smack bang in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD. I always like to do my research in regards to places I’ve never eaten at before so I Googled the restaurant, and to my delight, I found out that Red Spice Road specialised in South East Asian cuisine. I was even more excited to see some Vietnamese style dishes on the menu. Read more…

Steel Bar and Grill Sydney – Review

December is that time of year when the corporates get into the Christmas spirit and take their clients out for Christmas lunches/dinner. One of the corporates I deal with very closely took my team out to lunch at the Steel Bar and Grill in the CBD of Sydney. As always, I did a little research on the place and discovered that the owner and one of head chefs there is none other than Damian Heads, who I watch ALL the time on ‘Ready Steady Cook’ on Channel 10. This little tid-bit of information excited me as it represented another opportunity to possibly get some celebrity chef photos (unfortunately Luke Nguyen wasn’t at Red Lantern), not that I’m the stalky-stalky type or anything… Read more…

The Cooking Chook does Christmas – Chicken Roulade with Sage Stuffing

If you are the one designated to putting on the Christmas spread, the one thing that brings down the Christmas spirit is the stress of having to whip up a wonderful meal for a large group of people. Australians kind of have this under control, generally putting on a BBQ or something similar which is quick, easy and relaxed (it also helps that Christmas is in the middle of summer here). At my house, my partner’s family is the only side of the family that celebrates Christmas so it’s not really too stressful and we generally have seafood, such as lobster and prawns, which is easy enough to cook up and serve. However, I do have friends that have the more traditional spread of turkey and ham – huge chucks of meat that take FOREVER to cook. Read more…

Red Lantern on Riley Sydney – Review

Red Lantern on RileyExcited didn’t even describe how I felt when I made a reservation for Red Lantern on Riley Street. I had already eaten at the original Red Lantern on Crown Street in Surry Hills and was quite taken with the food there. Each dish that my friends and I had ordered reminded me so much of the food that my Mum makes. It was like being transported back to my Mum’s kitchen. That being said, I had high hopes for the Darlinghurst restaurant, which is situated on Riley Street towards the City Cross Tunnel end. The menu at each restaurant is mostly different, with a couple of dishes being the same but the Riley Street menu offers a few mid courses giving you more dishes to choose from. Read more…

Pingy Prawn Saganaki

You could be forgiven for thinking that it is the middle of summer in Adelaide right now, with the city having a good run of hot days (it was 38ºC/100ºF a couple of days ago). In my opinion, the best type of food to eat when it’s hot is seafood and I had been pondering for the last couple of weeks over what seafood-y dishes I could cook this summer. One of the foodie blogs I am really enjoying at the moment is Cook. Eat. Blog. This blog has a plethora of sensational recipes from all over the World with the dishes cooked by the blog owner, Lee. I highly recommend checking out Lee’s blog! I also follow Lee on Twitter, and he regularly tweets a random recipe from his collection. On this particular day, Lee just happened to tweet about his Prawn Saganki recipe. PING! Light-bulb moment! Read more…
