The Cooking Chook has finally schemed a way out

Excerpt from the ‘About thecookingchook’ page….

A thirty-something science nerd who is stuck in the financial services industry but is scheming a way out.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am delighted to inform you all that I have finally schemed a way out! Actually, that isn’t quite true. My way out is in a few weeks, but it’s a way out nonetheless. What is my escape, you ask? For those playing at home that haven’t been on The Cooking Chook train for long, I would like to tell you about a little dream I have. My dream is to become a Doctor. My earliest memory of wanting to become a Doctor involved me and a couple of broken bones at around the age of 5 (could be earlier or later, my memory is a bit fuzzy). I remembered how wonderful my Doctor was with ‘fixing’ me and making me feel better when I was in quite a distressed and painful state. From that point onwards, I wanted to be just like him. It was a very good year

*breaks into song* When I was thirty-something, it was a very good year. It was a very good year for cooking great food and receiving KitchenAid tools. And meeting great people in the blogosphere. I wonder what the next year will bring. When I was thirty-something.

OK – so maybe I should leave the singing to Frank Sinatra. If you’re not familiar with this song, check it out on YouTube. Even though there are still five days to go until the new year ticks over, I thought I’d take some time to reflect on the year that has been. Read more…

Here I go again…..

Those who are close to me know that for the last couple of years, I have been trying to get into medical school. For those who have just joined me on my bloggy journey, if you’re interested, you can have a read of my experience so far in this post. I’ve always wanted to be a Doctor. I can’t see myself in any other career but medicine. I want to practice medicine so badly that it hurts to think of a future where I’m not doing it. What I’ve been doing so far, in regards to employment, has just been that – something that I do to pay the bills. No interest, no passion, no joy. Read more…

Patience and perserverance

GAMSATpa·tience (pshns)

–  the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious

Today, after 159 days of waiting, I was notified that I was not successful in gaining an interview at a medical school I applied for. I have always wanted to be a Doctor, but I wasn’t ready for the commitment required to get into the undergraduate medicine course straight out of high school. When I graduated from University the first time with a science degree, I was sick of being a poor student and was ready to earn some money. Hence, my entry into the financial services industry.  Not long after finishing my first degree, I decided to start another degree that was more related to my employment but I wasn’t challenged by the content and, at that point, I was also unsatisfied with job. My heart lay with the sciences and until I was able to immerse myself in it every day, I wasn’t going to be happy. Read more…
