The best recipes are the ones written on little pieces of paper

Not all of the recipes I try are from the internet or foodie magazines. Some recipes are given to me, written on pieces of paper that have been handed down from a previous generation. You know that these kind of recipes are good because they have stood the test of time. Who would want to pass down a recipe that was awful? A couple of weeks ago, one of my work colleagues brought in home-made baklava to celebrate her birthday, and she was kind enough to share some with me. It tasted absolutely wonderful! I had to get my hands on the recipe. Read more…

A tribute to Pappou and Yiayia

‘When it rains, it pours’, isn’t that how the saying goes? In my case, this saying certainly describes the last two months of my life. In two months, three people were taken from my world, two of which were my DBF’s grandfather and grandmother – or Pappou and Yiayia as they say in Greek. Sounds a bit excessive doesn’t it. I was surprised at how hard the loss has hit me. I mean, Pappou and Yiayia were my DBF’s grandparents, not mine; however, I still felt a great sense of loss. Upon reflection of my feelings, I began to understand why I felt the way I did. Pappou and Yiayia were the closest thing I ever had to real grandparents. Read more…

Pingy Prawn Saganaki

You could be forgiven for thinking that it is the middle of summer in Adelaide right now, with the city having a good run of hot days (it was 38ºC/100ºF a couple of days ago). In my opinion, the best type of food to eat when it’s hot is seafood and I had been pondering for the last couple of weeks over what seafood-y dishes I could cook this summer. One of the foodie blogs I am really enjoying at the moment is Cook. Eat. Blog. This blog has a plethora of sensational recipes from all over the World with the dishes cooked by the blog owner, Lee. I highly recommend checking out Lee’s blog! I also follow Lee on Twitter, and he regularly tweets a random recipe from his collection. On this particular day, Lee just happened to tweet about his Prawn Saganki recipe. PING! Light-bulb moment! Read more…

My big fat Greek-style pasta bake

Life in the modern World is all about being up at sparrow’s fart, rushing to work, working late, rushing home, wonder what the hell you’re going to have for dinner and then open your fridge only to find there’s nothing in it. Sometimes, the last thing I want to do is cook (despite loving it so much), but I really don’t want to go out and get food either.  That’s when cooking in bulk comes in handy.  I’m all for economies of scale, so I will make the time to cook a huge batch of something to shove in the freezer.  That way, I can still have a home cooked meal when I’m in a ‘meh’ mood, but not have to make the effort.
