The Cooking Chook does Chinese New Year – Spanky Chinese Almond Cookies

Chúc mừng năm mới! Happy New Year! Tomorrow (February 10) is Chinese New Year or Tết, as the Vietnamese call it. But, just before I launch into my usual spiel, I would like to say that I got absolutely spanked by baking attempting this recipe. I learnt two very important lessons:

  1. Never rush baking.
  2. Always go with your gut instinct.

These are a few of my favourite things – Luke Nguyen

It’s not every day that you get to meet one of your favourite celebrity chefs and tell them how much of an inspiration they are to you. I got my chance to do that today when I met Luke Nguyen at a book signing lunch. For those who don’t know Luke Nguyen, he is part of the extraordinary team at Red Lantern (which he owns with his partner, his sister and her partner), the best modern Vietnamese restaurant I know in Sydney. Luke has authored and contributed recipes to some amazing cookbooks, including two that I own personally (Secrets of the Red Lantern and The Songs of Sa Pa) and is the host of a couple of great cooking shows (Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam and Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong) that feature on SBS. The foodie road to self-discovery: Why it is great being a Vietnamese-Australian

There are advantages to being a Vietnamese-Australian.  Having been born in Australia, I escaped the horrors that my parents went through with the Vietnam War.  Understandably, to this day, they don’t talk much about what happened back then.  Living in Australia also means having access to some wonderful food produce.  I’m lucky enough to live near the Adelaide Central Market which is one of South Australia’s food meccas (in my opinion), and I go there most weeks to do my food shopping.  I absolutely adore this place, because you can pretty much get whatever is on your shopping list regardless of whether it is your normal everyday grocery items or something that is a little more gourmet and special.
